Thomas McGuaneAt 6PM PST on May 25, Thomas McGuane and Eric M. Johnson, author of the new novel “Whenever a Happy Thing Falls,” which we recently excerpted, will meet in a live streaming event to share their struggles and triumphs on the path to following their own dreams. Tickets ($5) can be purchased here.

“Following Your Dreams in a Material World”

One thing that seems to be true in all generations of American life is that it can be challenging to summon the courage to follow your dreams in a material world. In this conversation with writers Eric M. Johnson and Thomas McGuane, they consider this difficulty paralleled with their own work and lives. Through the lens of Johnson’s debut novel—a story of a young man who must decide what he stands for in the midst of Wall Street greed and family civil war—and McGuane’s fiction and life, they share their struggles and triumphs on the path to following their own dreams. With short readings from their respective works, they touch on writing, life, and fly fishing. Don’t miss this riveting discussion from two consummate American writers.

Thomas McGuane is an American writer. He began contributing fiction to The New Yorker in 1994. He has written ten novels, including the National Book Award-nominated Ninety-Two in the Shade, as well as six nonfiction essay collections and two short-story collections. His work has been anthologized in the “Best American Stories,” “Best American Essays,” and “Best American Sporting Essays.” His most recent book is Cloudbursts: Collected and New Stories.

Eric M. Johnson is an American journalist, author, and outdoorsman. His current journalistic focus is aerospace – from Boeing’s 737 MAX crisis to Elon Musk’s SpaceX – and he has covered former President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, breaking national news, and transportation since joining Reuters in 2011 in Chicago. He has also been a staff reporter for Sun-Times Media Group and covered sports for the Observer, in London.

Presented by Town Hall Seattle.

If you’ve been paying attention to national media in the past few days, no doubt you’ve seen mention of a Montana fishing guide confronting Fox News host Tucker Carlson in the iconic Dan Bailey’s fly shop in downtown Livingston, Montana.  NBC News reported that a video “from a Montana fly fishing shop shows a man berating Fox News host Tucker Carlson, calling him the ‘worst human being known to man.'”

According to NBC News, “the shop, Dan Bailey’s Outdoor Company, said the business was not related to the Dan Bailey shown in the video and added: ‘To be clear, we treat every customer equally and respectfully. Our staff was professional and cordial to Mr. Carlson, as we are with all of our customers.'”

Montana Fishing Regulations

As reported in The New York Times this week, Montana has announced significant new restrictions on a number of rivers including the Missouri, while Yellowstone National Park has announced limits on fishing that prohibit fishing from 2PM until sunrise (“hoot owl” restrictions).

Notes reporter Jim Robbins: “The term ‘hoot owl restrictions’ stems from the early days of the timber industry. Loggers work early in the mornings of late summer, when it’s cooler, because the forests are dry and that increases the risk of chain saws or other equipment sparking a fire. Loggers often heard owls during their early morning shifts.”

Euro Nymphing

TroutBitten’s Domenick Swentosky offers up another tip in his series on more effective tight line fly fishing, this one focused on finding contact.

“Contact nymphing is just as much about being out of touch as being in. But the margins of slack here are inches and not feet,” writes Swentosky. “And, in truth, before we can slip out of touch, we need to first find that contact.”

Fly Fishing Montana

Chris D’Angelo reports in the Huff Post this week that the Yellowstone Club, whose members include Bill Gates, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, is “fueling a crisis” in the nearly Gallatin River, due to algae blooms likely caused by nutrient pollution.

“Since summer 2005, neon green algae — a telltale sign of an unhealthy river — has plagued the West Fork Gallatin, which flows directly through the resort town, leaving a ‘green trail’ extending downstream of where the tributary dumps into the Gallatin,” writes D’Angelo. “More recently, the problem has exploded on the river’s main stem.”

Fly Fishing for Bass

Phil Monahan offers up three keys to catching largemouth bass on surface flies, noting “it’s not as easy as you might think. Bass aren’t like northern pike, almost always willing to chase down a big meal. In fact, bass can be quite picky and will often ignore big, noisy topwater flies. Here are a few steps you can take to improve your odds.”

The passing of his father and thoughts about his two young boys inspired Jeff Davis to create rod builder Maine Fly Company.  “‘How do I want to raise these boys? Dad coming home late and leaving early with a briefcase? Or Dad living a dream and inspiring these boys to do the same,’ he said. ‘That was very important to me.'”

Peggy Keyser tells the story in News Center Maine.

Mark Taylor tells the story of former Virginia paramedic Beau Beasley, who came to fly fishing through a fascination with popping bugs and went on to found the Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine Festival and the Texas Fly Fishing and Brew Festival. Beasley has also written for MidCurrent and is the author of two books, Fly Fishing Virginia and Fly Fishing the Mid-Atlantic.

“Even as he puts the finishing touches on book number three—this one about fishing with veterans—Beasley still finds time to get out on the water. Not long ago, he tangled with a 120-pound blacktip shark off the North Carolina coast.”
